Sony Cyber-shot DSC-U60
This camera is like an apple pie, but you sure can ruin your day if you accidentally drop your camera in the sand or water. The nifty 2-megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-U60 ($250 list) is cleverly designed for maximum fun and shooting on the beach or under the waves without worryingeat pictures.
The cool-looking U60 is about the size, shape, and weight of an electric razor. You hold it vertically in the right hand, with the 1-inch LCD viewfinder (there's no optical viewfinder), shutter button, flash tube, and bottom of the camera skewed at an angle of about 30 degrees, so you don't have to twist your wrist into an uncomfortable position to shoot straight on. Curiously, you can turn off the backlit LCD, which may save battery life, but makes framing your subject nearly impossible. Controls are very simplemages save to a Sony Memory Stick, and the camera is powered by two rechargeable nickel hydride triple-A batteries. The battery and memory card compartment are sealed with a replaceable O-Ring, which Sony says makes the camera waterproof down to 5 feet. The lock switch on the side of the camera has a safety latch to prevent accidental opening.
