Argus DC3810 Argus DC3810

Argus, a venerable American company that has been manufacturing photographic products for over 60 years, has been a minor player in the digital camera market. The company takes a good stab at changing that with the Argus DC3810 ($499 list), which is far and away the least expensive, full-featured 5-megapixel digital camera anywhere. The DC3810 is remarkably easy to operate and comes at an unbeatable price. It will appeal to those who want plenty of value for their money, but slow performance, not-quite-excellent image quality, minor annoyances, and shoddy construction will disappoint more demanding users. This handsome, full-sized, silver-and-dark gray plastic camera is best held and used in both hands. It has only a handful of controls: Display, Menu, and Enter buttons, a four-way jog button, a Select dial and a sliding Power switch. On the jog button, the right and left arrows double as the zoom lever, and the up and down arrows are for flash, audio record, and focus. The controls are conveniently placed. More

Canon EOS D30 Canon EOS D30

The D30 so special? Lots of reasons, it's Canon's first "home grown" digital SLR, built from the ground up to be a digital SLR, their previous forays into the digital SLR world, the EOS-D2000 and EOS-D6000 were joint ventures with Kodak (Canon bodies with Kodak internals), these cameras are also known as the DCS520 and DCS560.

The D30 comes fully loaded, filled with features and functionality you'd expect of a camera teetering on the edge of wearing a "Pro" badge (and probably more deserving than some of those that do), add to this the fact that Canon threw a curved ball by using the first ever multi-megapixel CMOS sensor to be seen in a production camera and you can see why the EOS-D30 is significant.

The other thing that makes the EOS-D30 special is that it (like the Fujifilm S1 Pro) is helping to open up the "prosumer digital SLR" market, the retail $3,000 may not be considered cheap, but there are considerable numbers of non professionals who can afford (and no doubt will buy) the EOS-D30. Canon EOS-D60 Canon EOS-D60

The EOS D60 is the much anticipated upgrade of Canon's popular EOS D30 SLR that was first introduced in 2000. The D30 set new standards for price and performance and as the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," so Canon didn't, they just improved it. The EOS D30 was our choice for the "best digital Amateur SLR of 2001" as it has been virtually unchallenged for over a year and a half. This year the Canon EOS D60, Nikon D100 and the Fuji S2 Pro will battle it out for the top spot of 2002. More

Canon PowerShot A510 Canon PowerShot A510

The 3.2-megapixel Canon PowerShot A510, which was released in tandem with the 4MP PowerShot A520, is a replacement for the PowerShot A75. It is smaller and lighter than its predecessor, and is identical to the A520 except for its smaller image sensor. Overall, the picture quality is good, but the camera suffers from some of the same flaws as its higher-resolution sibling, especially in the speed department. But the A510 offers excellent flexibility and control for a modest price, making it a good value for those who don't need a whole lot of extra pixels. More

Canon PowerShot G2 Canon PowerShot G2

The G2 is based on the same 'prosumer compact camera' form factor with an almost central lens, viewfinder window and right-handed flash unit. Immediately obvious this time around is that Canon realized the little 'blip' of rubber on the G1 wasn't enough as a sensible grip, now we get a fully moulded (though plastic and a little thin) hand grip. The second most obvious change is the colour. The camera is done out in a kind of 'three tone' - the front is champagne coloured magnesium alloy, the center (top / sides) silver plastic and the rear a kind of metallic painted silver plastic.
