Argus DC3810
Argus, a venerable American company that has been manufacturing photographic products for over 60 years, has been a minor player in the digital camera market. The company takes a good stab at changing that with the Argus DC3810 ($499 list), which is far and away the least expensive, full-featured 5-megapixel digital camera anywhere. The DC3810 is remarkably easy to operate and comes at an unbeatable price. It will appeal to those who want plenty of value for their money, but slow performance, not-quite-excellent image quality, minor annoyances, and shoddy construction will disappoint more demanding users. This handsome, full-sized, silver-and-dark gray plastic camera is best held and used in both hands. It has only a handful of controls: Display, Menu, and Enter buttons, a four-way jog button, a Select dial and a sliding Power switch. On the jog button, the right and left arrows double as the zoom lever, and the up and down arrows are for flash, audio record, and focus. The controls are conveniently placed.

Canon EOS 20D
The first digital SLR which amateur photographers could really afford. So here we are, 52 months later with the latest incarnation of that original design, the eight megapixel EOS 20D. Not since February 2002 (the EOS D60) has Canon increased the resolution of this line of digital SLRs, in the EOS 20D we have a 1.9 million effective pixel increase, a new AF system, 50% faster continuous shooting and more than double the buffer space.
First impressions of the EOS 20D are good, it feels far less 'prosumer like' and instead feels more like a 'baby EOS-1D' (as described by one of our team). Gone are some of the annoyances of the EOS 10D, the 20D now switches on virtually instantly and focuses quickly, it feels very solid and yet weighs slightly less than the model it replaces. So far so good.

Canon PowerShot A430
With a 4-megapixel sensor and a 4X optical zoom lens, the Canon PowerShot A430 ($179.95 list) is a really nice buy for an inexpensive, compact digital camera. The lens offers a 5.4mm-to-21.6mm range (equivalent to a 35mm lens with a 39mm-to-156mm zoom) and corresponding maximum f-stops of f/2.8 to f/5.8. But I wish Canon would offer more ease-of-use and help features in the menus; this would be a big help to beginners who never crack the camera's manual.

Canon PowerShot A510
The 3.2-megapixel Canon PowerShot A510, which was released in tandem with the 4MP PowerShot A520, is a replacement for the PowerShot A75. It is smaller and lighter than its predecessor, and is identical to the A520 except for its smaller image sensor. Overall, the picture quality is good, but the camera suffers from some of the same flaws as its higher-resolution sibling, especially in the speed department. But the A510 offers excellent flexibility and control for a modest price, making it a good value for those who don't need a whole lot of extra pixels.
