Olympus Camedia C-5060
The new 5.1-megapixel Olympus Camedia C-5060 camera ($700 street) gives wide-angle shooters something to cheer about. In spite of the huge variety of digital cameras on the market, relatively few offer true wide-angle coverage without the use of bulky add-on lenses.
The C-5060 body design is almost identical to that of its predecessor, the C-5050, which will remain in production. The C-5060's 4X zoom lens covers an effective 27 to 110 mm (35-mm camera equivalent) versus the C-5050's more modest 35- to 105-mm film-equivalent lens. The wide-angle capabilities make the C-5060 ideal for taking building interiors, scenic shots, and panoramas, but low-light shooters may prefer the C-5050.

Olympus E-100 Rapid Shot
The E-100 RS is all black, comes with a pop-up flash and extended eyecup, and has a long lens snout that makes the camera's length greater than the width. Despite the seemingly awkward dimensions, though, the large but lightweight unit is well-balanced and easily operated with one hand. The 10X zoom lens, which is equivalent to a 38- to 380-mm lens on a 35-mm camera, has a 2.7X digital zoom that extends the range to 1,088mm. An optical stabilizer virtually eliminates jitters and shakes. Like the Olympus C-2100, the E-100 RS features an eye-level electronic viewfinder with true through-the-lens viewing. The camera has slots for both SmartMedia and CompactFlash (Type I and II) memory cards.

Pentax Optio 330
The all-metal Optio 330 is about the size and shape of a deck of cards--small enough and light enough to slip into a pocket or purse. It has a high-tech, high-quality look and feel, fits nicely into your palm, and makes one-handed operation easy. Its few controls are readily accessible and well marked. Depending on the camera's mode, though, several buttons perform dual functions, which can be somewhat confusing.

Sigma SD9
The Sigma SD9 ($1,400 street) is the only camera to use the innovative new Foveon X3 chip, the first chip that is sensitive to all three primary colors. Conventional CMOS and CCD image sensors are monochromatic, so they use a mask of colored dots (called a Bayer mask) overlaid on the sensor. Electronics in the camera read information from the sensor at the instant of exposure and generate a three-color RGB value for each pixel using a process called interpolation. The X3 sensor produces an RGB value for each pixel on the chip, eliminating the need for the mask and the interpolation

Sony Alpha DSLR-A100
Sony's Alpha DSLR-A100 is the company's first attempt at bringing a digital SLR to market. This camera's design may look familiar, howevernership last year, followed by Konica Minolta's surprising departure from the camera and film business. This left Sony with an excellent catalog of proven D-SLR products, including camera bodies, lenses, flashes, and accessories. Still, the question remains whether Sony simply rebranded the 5D or reworked it into a better device. It turns out that Sony did a little of both.
