Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7
The FZ7 features a LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT Lens with a remarkable 12x optical zoom, equivalent to a 35 to 430mm lens on a 35mm film camera. A film camera with an optical zoom this powerful would be so big and heavy, you couldn´t handle it with one hand. The FZ7, on the other hand, is small, lightweight and easy to handle. It also has Panasonic's Extended Optical Zoom.
While causing minimal deterioration by using the center part of the high-resolution CCD, this function magnifies the image to give you total zoom power of 17.5x - roughly equivalent to a huge 1680mm lens on a 35mm camera. Jitter from shaky hands is one of the main reasons why cameras produce blurry images.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ5
Panasonic's recent ad campaign promoting MEGA O.l.S., its image stabilization technology, includes the catch phrase "Life's a blur. Your photos shouldn't be." It's a good line and, for the most part, appropriately highlights this technology's performance. The MEGA O.l.S. (optical image stabilizer) hardware comes in handy on Panasonic's 6-megapixel Lumix DMC-LZ5 compact digital camera, which has twice the zoom range of most compacts I've tested. As it does with most Panasonic cameras, the MEGA O.I.S. works well, and it enabled me to capture lots of blur-free, well-exposed images. Unfortunately, the camera's overall performance was disappointing, especially the significant shutter lag, which can be annoying when trying to capture action shotssports, or children playing.

Sanyo Xacti VPC-E6
The Sanyo Xacti VPC-E6U ($399.99 list) has fairly standard image-capture elements for an ultracompact: A 6-megapixel sensor and a 3X optical zoom with a 6.3mm-to-18.9mm range (a 35mm equivalent of 38mm to 114mm) and corresponding maximum f-stops of f/3.3 to f/4.0. It does have a sleek exterior and sweet 3-inch LCD screen, but here's the feature that distinguishes the camera from all others we've seen to date: It talks. The pleasant female voice, along with other odd features, gives it a quirky vibe. Unfortunately, this shooter just doesn't perform as well as its main rivals, the Kodak EasyShare-One and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-N1.
